A Nod to (the) Joe Preston

"In one way or another, you have heard Joe Preston. Earth, The Melvins, Thrones, High on Fire, SUNN 0)))...if it's slow and heavy as fuck, he was problably on it...one CD of his that I got a hold of several months back is the Joe Preston album that was one of the Melvins albums that were meant to be solo albums just like the KISS solo albums (KISS, is that a band?). Joe's album contains three songs; "The Eagle Has Landed" 1:58, "Bricklebrit" 2:36 and my favorite, "Hands First Flower" (clocking in at) 22:58. "Hands First Flower" was what BORIS and SUNN 0))) and a host of other bands are doing now except Joe did it way back in 1992. Even Dylan Carlson had only been doing his thing a few short years by then...and HE did that WITH Joe. Kudos and a half for the big fuckin' bear that is still dragging us through the sludge of happiness.

For another romp with Joe, check out The Melvins and him on , Melvins/Lysol, The Thrones White Rabbit/Sperm Whale, and SUNN 0)))'s , White 2.

Eric Reed Boucher is not Dead

Direct from Alternative Tentacles:

Jello News - 01/28/07: Quashing rumors: Jello is alive.

Over the weekend, people have been spreading rumors that Jello Biafra has been shot or was killed. We've received quite a few queries from people everywhere. This is completely UNTRUE. AT staff has spoken to Jello, and he said he checked himeself for bullet holes and didn't find any. Thank you to those who expressed their concern.

TorqueZine Logo V.1

My friend Matt Vaughn, Drummer for The Dandelion Winos and Jimmy Reeves has worked on a logo for TorqueZine. He says he'd like to work on yet another one, one that per him is more "Torqued". THANKS VERY MUCH MATT!!! More logos on the way from more Dallas based musicians, but in the mean time, check out Matt's bands and go see him perform.

Alice Coltrane died of respiratory failure at West Hills Hospital and Medical Center in suburban Los Angeles. Reportedly she had been in frail health for some time before her death. Alice was a jazz pianist, organist, harpist, and composer and was married to jazz saxophonist and composer John William Coltrane.

A Nod to (Blood Inside Era) Ulver

I: In July 2004, Ulver finished recording Blood Inside, which was released on June 6th, 2005. With Blood Inside, the band stepped away from the more minimal styles they had been experimenting with previously. Bringing back more traditional rock instruments like guitar and acoustic drums (since 1998 the band had used primarily digital drums and/or sampled beats), and combining them with a whole slew of real and synthetic classical instruments, brass horns and sound samples, the band created something they had never done before. Managing to fuse genres ranging from rock, classical, minimalism, electronica and vintage prog with Garm's broad vocal range, Ulver created an album that was far beyond anything anyone has heard in the avantgarde scene.

II: Blood Inside captured so many moods and atmospheres that it was nearly impossible to review when given the opportunity to do so in 2005. The album mixes numerous genres intertwining complex ranges of sound and textures to amalgumate into an entirely organic yet synthetic result. Blood Inside simpley has to be experienced to be fully appreciated.

A Nod to (a) Pogue

"I'm just following the Irish tradition of songwriting, the Irish way of life, the human way of life. Cram as much pleasure into life, and rail against the pain you have to suffer as a result. Or scream and rant with the pain, and wait for it to be taken away with beautiful pleasure."

A Nod to (the) Unsane

I am an extremely huge fan of Chris Spencer and the Unsane. The genuine grit involving a mood that only New York could have created speaks volumes about an unforgiving world that will entertain as it destroys. Chris' lyrics and visuals speak for themselves. Do yourself a favor and check them out by clicking on the pic and enter into what could quite possibly be the darkest depiction of how vile and depraved real life can be in the eyes of one who's seen first hand just how unfair and irresponcible humans can be.
