Mark D

This week, the first single from ex-Melvins/Clown Alley guitarist MARK DEUTROM's third solo album, Brief Sensuality and Western Violence, has been released preceding the LP's release. Rolling with nearly five and a half minutes of fuzz-laden wandering riffs, the vividly visual lyrics in "Sky Full Of Witches" may at first instigate acid-trip Halloween tales, yet the true story being told here is one much more ominous and fully grounded in our present day of technological over-expansion.

Perhaps it would be best to let DEUTROM elaborate on this himself. "In 2012 the so called FAA Modernization and Reform act included a provision for fully integrating unmanned aircraft into the US National Airspace by 2015" he reports. "The FAA expects that by 2020 there will be 30,000 licensed drones in the air. This brought to my mind images of all the medieval engravings of witches flying through the sky, and their total command of the space. Nothing else is ever in the sky with them, except for other witches. The medieval context is not lost on me, with some of the other values of that time being enthusiastically embraced at the present. Sky Full of Witches is about being conscious of the encroaching all-seeing eye, and perhaps a fleeting nostalgia for the absence of a genuine superstition that only appears in the darkest of times."

The single for "Sky Full Of Witches" is now available via all major digital outlets including iTunes, CD Baby and more. Brief Sensuality and Western Violence will be released independently on September 16th, with more details and music to be released shortly. Engineered at Ohm Recording Facility in Austin, recorded by Chico Jones and mixed by Chad Bamford, the nearly hour-long Brief Sensuality and Western Violence voyages through both ominous and peaceful territories though a variety of vocal approaches and instrumentation, bleeding together into nearly an hour of guitarist, composer, songwriter, singer and producer MARK DEUTROM's most organic and unreserved material to date.
