Unholy Black Metal

Anyone who knows me knows that I am FAR from a fan of tribute albums. While I do like to hear bands doing covers, the concept of a "tribute" album is most usually stroking the ego of the band being covered as well as the band doing the covering and is also loaded primarily with bands that have nothing to do with a) the scene, or b) the spirit of the band being covered and, is almost always just a way for a label to showcase bands they would like to expand into other markets. With that said, Darkthrone Holy Darkthrone is different. Marking the 10th anniversary of the mighty Darkthrone, their label wanted to mark to occasion with a "best of". Spotting this horrible idea from a million miles away and thankfully not wanting to touch it with a ten foot pole, the band instead gave the label (Moonfog Records) permission to do a commemorative back patch. The compromise of course was the band wanted other bands that they themselves liked to be able to interpret their songs, which the lable also thought was a great idea. The result is a captivating look at how this band has effected not only the scene, but many of the most predominate bands within it. Bands of prestige on this effort include Satyricon, Emperor, Enslaved, Gorgoroth, Immortal, Dodheimsgard, Gehenna and Thorns (actually that's all of them) and while each puts their own stamp on the songs, it still speaks volumes about the devastation left in the wake of Darkthrone's illustrious career. This collection comes highly recommended by yours truly for not only the die-hard DT fan, but for the first timers that want a view into what a "tribute" should really be.
