LUMBAR

One of the year’s most unexpected doom metal albums is also now one of 2013’s most anticipated, as the debut LP from Pacific Northwestern trio LUMBAR is being prepared for arrival.

While this brutalizing slow-motion trio boasts what some are referring to as “supergroup” status — containing members Aaron Edge (Himsa, Iamthethorn, Roareth, Brothers of the Sonic Cloth), Mike Scheidt (YOB) and Tad Doyle (Tad, Brothers of the Sonic Cloth) — LUMBAR was formed by these longtime friends for much more than simply creating riffs.

The brainchild of Aaron Edge, LUMBAR came together earlier this year when the well-known guitarist/drummer/graphic designer was unexpectedly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. What would be his final musical endeavor before waves of rapidly-spreading pain engulfed him and extended hospital stays became more than frequent, is now his most imperative.

On LUMBAR’s debut album, The First and Last Days of Unwelcome, Edge is joined by Mike Scheidt and Tad Doyle, the latter of whom also shares rank in Brothers 0f the Sonic Cloth with Aaron, who helped bring this intense and important project to fruition. The musical result is as diverse and destructive as one may expect from such a lineup, with the varied influence from this trio of musicians coalescing into seven organic and tonally oppressive movements. Ethereal ghostly passages and spacious expanses of minimalistic disharmony cone to an end in sonic obliteration through mesmerizing and pulverizing, as an array of distinct vocal mantras echo from the heart of it all.

Southern Lord will release The First and Last Days of Unwelcome on LP and digital formats on November 26th, followed by a CD version direct from the band and a cassette version via Holy Mountain, with all of the band’s proceeds going to aid Edge’s medical expenses and treatments.

The First and Last Days of Unwelcome Track Listing:
1. Day One
2. Day Two
3. Day Three
4. Day Four
5. Day Five
6. Day Six
7. Day Seven

ABSU - Magic(k) in-ten-cities

ABSU today announce details on their upcoming tour, titled North American Connexus Continuation. The ten-city tour will see the band perform a complete set with music spanning throughout their twenty-two year recording career. This excursion is a follow-up mini-tour by the Texas-based mythological occult metal trio since the release of Abzu - the second of a planned trilogy of recordings.

Vocalist/drummer Proscriptor shares, "Since the release of our latest recording, Abzu, the response has been extremely vehement and now is the perfect moment to continue spreading the album's essence throughout unchartered regions the band did not perform in earlier this year. We purposely waited until the timing was ideal to embark on this additional journey, as we shall continue contaminating the communities with our craft of Mythological Occult Metal."

Proscriptor also adds, "We have begun the composition/arrangement process for the next album, suitably titled Apsu, which is the Sumerian-Akkadian spelling of the band moniker. We shall wait until the new album is released before we present any of the new material in a live atmosphere."

Abzu, the band's seventh studio album, was released October 2011. The album was recorded/mixed by J.T. Longoria (King Diamond/Solitude Aeternus) and features original works by Polish artist Zbigniew Bielak (Ghost, Watain, Entombed, Behemoth, Destroyer 666, Vader, Etc.) Proscriptor commented, "With this record, we appended dirtier elements of psychedelia and fusion. Lyrically, it descends deeper into Enki's lower world as well the Thelemic Magic(k) System." He added, "This album is not a 'natural progression' from previous releases, but a feat of metaphysical conquest and murkiness."

ABSU came to prominence with the release of their 1993 debut, Barathrum: V.I.T.R.I.O.L.  Each album saw continual expansion of the band's now highly regarded artistic vision and international fanbase. It was with 2001's Tara that the band truly arrived.  The album reached top lists of countless magazines worldwide. Years, however, would pass before any new material would be recorded. In late 2007, the band finally announced their re-awakening. Now teamed with London-based Candlelight Records, the band would take nearly sixteen months writing/recording their sixth album. Absu, featuring contributions from members of King Diamond, Mayhem, Melechesh, Firstborn and Enthroned, was released early 2009.

THIS WILL DESTROY YOU

American post-rock exhibitionists THIS WILL DESTROY YOU are pleased to announce the release of Live in Reykjavik, Iceland later next month. Captured at Harpa Concert Hall, the mammoth offering features eleven gorgeous live renditions of material spanning across Young Mountain, S/T and Tunnel Blanket. Live In Reykjavik, Iceland was engineered by Finnur Hákonarson, mixed by Alex Bhore and Charlie Vela and mastered by Alan Douches and will be issued as via Magic Bullet a triple LP, double CD, and digital allowing fans to truly experience THIS WILL DESTROY YOU in a far more textured and visceral live environment. First pressings of the LP will come in white, grey and black vinyl.

Live In Reykjavik, Iceland Track Listing:
01. A Three Legged Workhorse
02. There are Some Remedies Worse Than the Disease
03. Black Dunes
04. Burial on the Presidio Banks
05. Glass Realms
06. Communal Blood
07. Quiet
08. They Move on Tracks of Never-Ending Light
09. Little Smoke
10. The Mighty Rio Grande
11. Threads

THIS WILL DESTROY YOU began in earnest during the mid-‘00s in San Marcos, Texas, their initial sound a logical destination point for four friends that had been playing in a variety of bands together throughout their teens. In 2005, the group began writing and recording what was intended to be a simple six-song documentation of where they were at musically. Instead, that demo became Young Mountain, THIS WILL DESTROY YOU’s debut full-length, released through Magic Bullet.

From then on, the trajectory of THIS WILL DESTROY YOU became meteoric in arc and path. Acclaim from critics and fans alike came pouring in seemingly overnight (Rock Sound Magazine bestowed “Album of the Year 2006″ honors on Young Mountain). The songs quickly found marriage to various licensing projects across film, television, web, and video projects the world over. Even the Pentagon was caught up in the hysteria, using two songs in a disaster preparedness presentation held before the nation’s top military brass in the wake of New Orleans’ catastrophic Hurricane Katrina. Suddenly, the choice between band and “real life” became not so clear for all involved.

After some domestic touring, the band record S/T, 2008’s follow-up full length. Upon its release, THIS WILL DESTROY YOU cycled through countless days on tour both domestically and abroad, pausing only to issue a handful of EPs. As day after week after month after year piled up on the road, the rigors and alternate reality of touring life began to take its toll. Where once stood young men simply excited about exploring the world for the first time, now loomed grizzled veterans with worn out passports, broken bodies, darkened minds, and an existentialism that would crush even Camus. Relationships failed miserably, family and friends either drifted and/or passed away, and “home” became a far more abstract concept than in years prior.

It was amidst this darkened age of despair and equilibratory destruction that the band began to create an entirely new strain upon the trademark sounds that defined Young Mountain and S/T. Nocturnal writing sessions begat entirely sinister, yet simultaneously emotional passages. Tunnel Blanket is their third full-length proper. While previous albums managed to strike a universal chord of human hope and near-optimism toward the future, Tunnel Blanket is the darker and more intricate sides of human emotion, grief, and tragedy. It’s “pretty” in the way decomposition is pretty; “artful” in the precise way that a sniper’s bullet passes through the largest artery is artful.

Live In Reykjavik, Iceland cultivates some of the most epic moments of each album into one otherworldly soundscape of eloquent despair.

Live In Reykjavik, Iceland will be released digitally on October 22, 2013 and on triple-LP and double-CD on October 29, 2013 via Magic Bullet Records.

CLERIC

As Texas-based CLERIC — the vile death metal faction featuring members of Kill the Client, Baring Teeth, and Tyrannosorceress and more — prepares for the release of their debut album Gratum Inferno, today the band proudly fans the LP’s raging flames with a blazing new video for the track “Through The Starless Abyss”… literally, blazing.

Directed by Shane Connelly of Photon Flood [link], “Through The Starless Abyss” was filmed in the dead of night in a very rural undisclosed location in Emory, Texas. The multi-camera execution captures the members of CLERIC fully encircled by a raging bonfire while they hammer out the song, bringing the concept of the Gratum Inferno title literally roaring to life. And what could be more metal than praising Satan surrounded by fire and death in the middle of the night? Exactly.

Recorded by Garry Brents (Kill The Client, Phobia, Noisear) and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (From Ashes Rise, Nails, Sleep), Gratum Inferno boasts nearly a half-hour of CLERIC’s Stockholm-bred but Americanized death through seven hymns of debauchery, with haunting horror-soundtrack elements permeating from deep within its hellish core. Mastered at 45rpm for superior sound quality, the LP is pressed on 200-gram, translucent yellow wax with blood red and milky clear splatter and features heavyweight spot-varnish printed jackets, gold foil-stamped inner-sleeve graphics and bears insane cover art was masterminded by Jason Barnett (Noothgrush, etc.). Dallas-based Tofu Carnage will officially release Gratum Inferno on September 26th.
